Insights

Are you planning on adding a new kitten to your home? Or did you just adopt a furry kitty. There is nothing like the affection, playfulness, and energy a new furry kitty brings to your home. Your days will be filled with laughter and love as you admire their curious eyes, tiny paws, and endless antics. Kittens are delightful, but you’ll be responsible for caring for your new furry bundle of joy from the time they arrive.

You’ll take tons of cute photos to share with your friends and they’ll be so many cuddle times to enjoy. But it will take a lot more than that to help your new kitten grow into a happy, healthy adult cat. It’s important to have everything on hand to make the transition smooth for you both. Here’s our essential new kitten supplies checklist to ensure you are fully prepared for every adorable and chaotic moment ahead.

Supplies You’ll Need for Your New Kitten

1.     Commitment

No, commitment isn’t something you can run to the store and purchase, but you’re going to need a lot of it. Bringing a new kitten home is a long-term commitment. Domestic cats live between 16 and 20 years. With the latest advancements in nutrition and veterinary care, some cats can reach the early 20s. Be prepared to provide regular vet visits, daily care, and lots of love for your kitty’s entire life. Before adopting, think about your lifestyle, financial readiness, and future travel plans.

2.     Kitten-Specific Food and Feeding Supplies

Your new kitten has unique nutritional needs to grow up healthy. Select a high-quality veterinarian-recommended food specifically for kittens. You’ll also need some extra supplies, like:

·         Food and water bowls (stainless steel or ceramic)

·         Automatic feeder

·         Water fountain

·         Kitten treats

·         Food storage containers

3.     Cozy Spot to Sleep

Cats can sleep for up to 18 hours each day, especially while they are young. While you are trying to discover your new kitten’s preferences, provide various sleeping options. Additional supplies you may need include:

·         Cat bed

·         Soft blankets

·         Enclosed bed or cat cave

·         Window perch

Place beds in draft-free quiet areas for comfort.

4.     Litter Box and Hygiene Supplies

A clean litter box is a necessity for your kitty’s health and happiness. You may want to start with a low-sided litter box to make litter training easy from the start. Other supplies you may need include:

·         Extra litter boxes (one per cat plus one extra)

·         Litter mat (catches stray litter)

·         Unscented, clumping litter

·         Litter deodorizer (or baking soda)

·         Litter box liners (optional but very handy)

·         Enzyme cleaner (for outside the box accidents)

Scoop out the litter daily and wash the litter box weekly to keep odor and infections controlled.

5.     Grooming Supplies

Even if your new kitten is short-haired, they can benefit from regular grooming. It will help reduce shedding and hairballs. Supplies you’ll want to have on hand:

·         Soft-bristle brush or grooming glove

·         Kitten-safe shampoo

·         Ear cleaning solution

·         Pet wipes

Make Your New Kitten’s Health a Priority

Regular veterinary care, healthy food, and lots of exercise are needed for your new kitten to grow up healthy. Just remember that even the healthiest kitten can get sick or injured unexpectedly. Be as prepared as you can and enjoy your new kitten as they grow.
