Everyone should feel happy and comfortable in their own homes, and that includes pets. It may seem like an impossible task to keep peace between cats and dogs. But there are some ways to introduce new animals to one another whether you have a multi-pet home or are just introducing new animals to each other for the first time. The good thing is that there are some practical steps that can be taken to safely introduce a dog to a cat while promoting friendship between your furry family members.
Can Cats and Dogs Really Get Along?
Many homes have both cats and dogs living under the same roof. They usually learn to get along, but is it possible that they could become friends? Of course, people have believed for centuries that dogs and cats are sworn mortal enemies. However, there is evidence to suggest that is not the case.
In fact, some studies have suggested that well over half the time, the animals get along well and have positive relationships with one another. Some of the most common behaviors observed were dogs and cats playing together, sharing water bowls, and even napping or cuddling together. If you love both dogs and cats and don’t want to choose between the two, this is seriously some good news.
5 Steps to Introduce a Dog to a Cat
Whether you are bringing a cat into a dog home or the other way around, here are some basic steps to help you set them up for success.
1. Keep pets separated first.
When you bring a new pet into your home, you’ll want to allow them to get used to the environment before they interact with other animals in the home. Keep the dogs and cats separated and give the new pet time to adjust to its new home. For the first couple of weeks, keep the cat isolated by giving them their own room that has access to plenty of food and water and a litter box. Make sure the dog cannot get in with the cat. You may notice that the two pets will get used to each other’s sounds and smells from under the door – after all, they are curious!
2. Take it slowly.
This is probably a new experience for all the pets involved, so you’ll want to give them plenty of time to adjust. The best way to introduce a dog to a cat is to go slowly without forcing or rushing interactions. When you are ready, and you feel they are ready, put your dog on his leash, then let your cat out. Let the cat come to the dog to begin interacting. You may have to repeat this step a few times to give your pets plenty of time to get used to each other.
3. Keep different dog and cat behaviors in mind.
When you introduce a dog to a cat, each of them might react differently. Sometimes, cats appear more uncomfortable around dogs, and they may attack the canine. However, dogs can be nervous and attack cats. If the dog is the attacker, it can be more serious. Starting training when they are a puppy can help prevent situations like this.
Considering these types of things, it’s important to closely watch both pets during the interaction. The two should never be left alone while they are getting to know one another, even if it seems to be going okay. A cat might swat or hiss, and that’s okay because they are just demonstrating their boundaries. A dog might jump or bark, just hold tightly to their leach. Give them between 30 and 60 minutes before putting them back in their own spaces.
4. Take breaks if needed.
If there are any signs of trouble, it’s okay to remove the new pet and take a break. Just like you humans, relationships and friendships are built on mutual trust. There are also man factors that play a role, like age, species, and breed. Make sure to have separate safe spaces equipped with beds, grooming supplies, toys, and crates so they can retreat while they are learning to interact to their new family members.
5. Check with your vet.
It’s always a good idea to check in with your veterinarian before adding a new pet to your home. The personalities of dogs and cats can be very different, and there may be some tactics that will work better for certain breeds and ages. Your vet can offer advice on making safe and healthy introductions.
Dog and Cat Friendships Can Take Time
Dogs and cats may not become best friends immediately. They may need some time to get used to other furry family members. This is totally normal. Sometimes, one pet will take to their new family member, but the other one will need more time. If your dog doesn’t react, and the cat seems okay with it, they should be good. But if their interactions are not real friendly, slowly increase their interaction times until they are together all the time.
In some instances, dogs and cats just don’t ever get used to each other. But with a little patience and giving them time to get to know each other in a safe place, you can help them learn to be together peacefully under the same roof.
